“Your Future Needs You. Your Past Does Not.”

I saw a photo of the quote above on Instagram. It was by Inspiredbee. It jumped out at me, and I’ve been meditating on it a few days now. Why? Because it is true, and it speaks truth to my life.
In life, we tend to gravitate towards correcting mistakes, putting out fires, trying to right the wrongs in our lives, and make up for the past. A closer look will tell you that all we’re doing is living in the past. It’s like driving a car (present), moving forward (future), but looking in the rear view and side mirrors (past) most of the time; and looking through the windshield (future) only once in a while or occasionally. We’re doomed to crash, in more ways than one, if we continue in this manner.
It’s true, we cannot forget our past or wash it away. But it serves no purpose to live there either. We’re better off learning the lessons of the past, and utilizing the lessons in the present for a better tomorrow. So as the quote says, our tomorrow is the space that needs us, not our past. Our past is dead and gone, we cannot bring it back even if we wanted to, but we can use the lessons learned to build a better today and tomorrow.
